Reflections of AED 200

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
Going in to this course I really did not have any expectations of it because I registered for it on the last day. I was lucky to have gotten into the course. I just wanted to finish my art credits.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
Now That I have been through the whole course I know that art is anything. Before in my answer to what was art i limited art to be something merely expressive. Now i know that it can be a lot more than that. Art can be revolutionary and inspiring. Like I said after this class I know art can really be anything,

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
Going in to the class my favorite artist was Frida Kahlo. Now that I am done with the class i have the same favorite artist Frida Kahlo. The reason she is is because with her self portrait she showed me more than who she was. She showed me her straggles and her fears. Not every artist can do such a thing.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
this i not my fis=rst online class at all. However, I could say that this was the first online class in which i actually learned something. The fact that is was huge amount of work due every week forced me to work harder and learn. Nonetheless, there were some week where work became too much. Other than that, i recommend that everyone takes this class online.

Project #5 Art Critism Article

1. Which projects did you review?
I reviewed Animals in Art by Travis Rodriguez.

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?
The mere reason why i selected this art exhibit out of many was because of the theme. His theme was very different than the others. The animal theme was unique.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?
A challenge that I faced writing the article was actually starting to write it. I had a huge writer's block. The way I got over it was by introducing the article explaining project # 4 and what i liked about it.Then that gave me a beginning transition towards writing the article.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?
I felt really good critiquing my peers work because from the looks of it the person worked thar in making the exhibit. I am sure that with all the hard work put in the curator appreciates that someone is taking the time to view it.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?
I would love to read what some of my peers had to say about my article because it was something that took time to make. Having someone different than the teacher read it would make me feel like my time was more than worth it. It will also help me improve so that in the future I could do a better job.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?
I think I would rate my article a nine because I was very honest and I tried to interpret the art work to the best of my abilities. I also connected my article to something we had learn previously in the class.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I enjoy critiquing the exhibit more than making it because it is much easier to judge than to actually create a whole exhibit.

Video Review Blog

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned From the video that An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance I learn a lot about how the renaissance came about. I learn that when the roman empire was thriving there was a lot of art. The people had the freedom to create a lot of art. However, when the Barbadians attacked Rome many of the art was loosed with the culture. The video talks about Giorgio Vasari who was a man spent most of his time writing biographies of the famous artist of the renaissance time. After the Barbadians attacked artist were not allowed to use realistic ideas to show people. They were only allow to use flat religious figures. That was all until Giotto, he was the artist that brought back realism into the art world. He use a technique called perceptive in where he could make objects in the same flat surface look farther and closer apart. He used real models instead of flat religious figures and he took interest in painting nature. He also was one of the first artist to incorporate architecture into the artwork making it more realistic. He had a sense of three dimensional space that is commend now. The other video 'The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture'I learn about the views of non western art. I learn about the 1900 Paris worlds fairs that ran for 8 months and was the biggest fair in the world. half of the whole fair was devoted to the French Imperialism and the other half to the nation's colonies. However, in one side it showed how there were many nationalism. the image of the colonies were not coherent or consistent. There was an image of the Dahome ambassador that show he was very culture and civilized man. However in the exhibits they show the Dahome people in a very violent way. They showcased them as being uncivilized people. They used these images as an excuse to colonized and materialized these African countries. The other countries were presented by architecture. However, the African countries were said to have no architecture and was displayed to people as art in the eyes of the french.

 2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

One of the videos really was related to the way we created our Art Criticism project because in our project we had to showcase artworks and in the second video i talked about it describes how the french were critiquing and displaying the African art.

 3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

I really like the first video about the Renaissance because it was like a movie of a apprentice critiquing art. On the video the apprentice told Giorgio vasari that he did not understand how so many people liked Giotto's work. He described Giotto's art as very flat. At that moment he was being an art critique. However, Vasari quickly corrected him and told him that many important artist learned from the way Giotto painted. he later explained that it was Giotto that brought back nature and realism to the Roman art culture.

Module 13 14 video blog

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video that I choose was Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach. This video at first seemed odd to me because it strange that someone would create a whole segment on how modern art is displayed. The video discuss a museum of modern art that was open in 2004. They said it was one of the most successful modern art museums in the world. The museum of modern art in New York city open in 1929 and is often refereed to as MOMA. In this museum was created the new form of displaying modern art. The director displayed the art in a chronological order. he also displayed the art on white walls with white lighting. guest would move in a straight path through the exhibits. he would place art related to each other or by the same artist in a room.artist in the museum would also place the residue of their art work. how their homes looked after they finish the work. Some art galleries became noisy after the noisy art work was placed. The next vodei talks about lowbrow that is an art form from the west coast of the united states. Each artist has a meaning to what is lowbrow to them. Artist Antony Aussang explains that this art is reactionary to highbrow culture. The definition of the word lowbrow is a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. At first the name lowbrow was use to describe the art work that had naked girls and cars and cartoons. however, the name stuck and that is one of the ways it originated from.  Lowbrow has evolved to having a meaning of its know and it now does not mean what it did originally; which was pornography. A lot of planes and cars had lowbrow art on them. A lot of the mechanics became part of the lowbrow culture. It was an art that people could relate to whether it was about the cars or the pin up girls. Pop culture and consumerism cultures were very influential in the development of the genre. many Artist would raw the thing that they had in their house. They would also draw what was going on in society at the time like they did with people going into the space and the moon.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I think that only one of the videos relate to the creation of my art exhibit project. this was the first video that I talked about. The reason it relates because in the project we had to report on how the art exhibit was set up. I thought the teacher was just being stupid when she made us do this. However, After I saw the video i found out that a lot of work is put into finding out how an art work is going to be placed on an exhibit and how the audience are going to view it.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
Both films added depth and understanding to my about my projects. however, I did not like the film about art placement in an museum because it was boring. it did not make want to watch the whole entire film. however the one about lowbrow art was very good.

Burchfield Art Center Visit

Step 1: The Exhibition
1. What is the title of the exhibit?
well i was actually excited to come to Burchfield Penny because I had not been here in a long time. This means that by now they changed the exhibits. So because of that I went thorough all of them. However, the three that excited me the most were;
"Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now," "McCallum Tarry: Intersections," and "Iron Organism."

 "McCallum Tarry: Intersections

Iron Organism

2. What is the theme of the exhibition?
The theme of Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now, is a juxtaposition between old and new arts and crafts. They were all together in a flow of objects. Some of them were furniture others were sculptures that were abstract in form.
The theme for McCallum Tarry: Intersections was mainly focused on marginalized members of our society and the issues and struggles that they have had to go through.
The theme for Iron Organism simply in honor and explanation to to Iron and its properties. This exhibit explained how important iron is as an art material.

Step 2: The Gallery
1. What type of lighting is used?

Fof the Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now the light was very dim but every piece since it stood on its own had a spot light. However, the spot light did not look like a regular spot light because it still gave me a very settle feeling. Like it was not on my face.
McCallum Tarry: Intersections
2. What colors are used on the walls?
For the first exhibit the color on the wall of the gallery was not noticeable. Since most of the art work was not on the wall. I did not notice the wall as much. In the second one the walls were bright and White. They had most of the art work on the wall. The last one I also did not pay attention to because there was a lot of art work in the middle of the transit space.
3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?
The materials that were use were videos mostly. There were also Stands to elevate the work. In some there were glass screen protectors to protect the sculptures.
4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?
In the first one the movement was familiar because It was like walking through a home. A very expensive looking home. It had furniture and sculptures that made look like Some one's rich home.
In the second  one the movement was like a passage or a journey because you first saw a scream with a video then you turn to your right. Then after you went right there were photograph almost like an old family album. There was also a room you could go into that showed a video a a pregnant women.
The last one was like walking in an obstacle course because there was last work on the floor and in the middle of the way. There was artwork hanging from the sealing as well.

Step 3: The Artwork
1. How are the artworks organized?

the art work in the second exhibit was organized in frames like it was photos hanging in some ones home. The other two the art work was placed in the middle as if they got there on their own.
.
2. How are the artrworks similar?
In the second exhibit the art work was very similar to each other because most of it was photographs
In the first one the art work was very similar because most of it was some type of furniture you would have in your home.
In the last one the art work was similar because it was made with the same material.

3. How are the artworks different?
In the first exhibit the art work was different from each other because each was a piece of furniture that was separated from each other.
In the third exhibit the art work was also different from each other because it had different colors and shapes. They were all different objects.

4. How are the artworks framed?
The art work in the second exhibit was framed on the wall because they were photographs.
In the other other exhibits the art work was on the middle passage. It was organized in islands.
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?
All the art work in all three exhibit had a label on the side explaining its tittle and with what they were made.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?
The art work in the second exhibit the art work was very far from each other. In the other two the art work was close by in islands.

Peacock Box, Undated

Glazed Stone Work

The principles and elements of art that were most clear to me in this art work was shape and form. Shape because of the very feminine looking piece on the art work and form because of the form of the whole piece and the little round pieces that stick out of it.
This art work reminds me of a peacock. It did before I read the name. It looks very animallistic but at the same time feminine. The artist was trying to capture the femininity and beauty of a peacock into an abstract sculpture.

Request of Authur B. Michael by exchange & gift.
here a see the picture of an African American girl. She is looking forward  She does not have a smile on her face but a smirk  The picture is very clear not abstract but it is a small blur line. It may not be visible in this picture because of quality but it was visible in the other pictures. It is almost like the picture is lost in it's self. The principle of art that this piece uses is shape in a way the shape of her head and her collar attracts my attention. The artist wanted the viewers to get lost into the eys and history of this little girl.

Data Visualization, 2011By. Mary newbaverPainted on Iron and BronzeCourtesy of the artist.
In this piece i see many different shape pieces. They are separated. They look like corals. That was what it reminded me off. The principle of art used here are shape and color. Shape because of all the different shaped pieces and color because all the color here complement each other in a way. They make each other stand out. The artist wanted the viewer to see how resourceful is the iron and bronze. How natural metal can look when we usually look at it in an unnatural form.
