1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned
From the video that An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance I learn a lot about how the renaissance came about. I learn that when the roman empire was thriving there was a lot of art. The people had the freedom to create a lot of art. However, when the Barbadians attacked Rome many of the art was loosed with the culture. The video talks about Giorgio Vasari who was a man spent most of his time writing biographies of the famous artist of the renaissance time. After the Barbadians attacked artist were not allowed to use realistic ideas to show people. They were only allow to use flat religious figures. That was all until Giotto, he was the artist that brought back realism into the art world. He use a technique called perceptive in where he could make objects in the same flat surface look farther and closer apart. He used real models instead of flat religious figures and he took interest in painting nature. He also was one of the first artist to incorporate architecture into the artwork making it more realistic. He had a sense of three dimensional space that is commend now. The other video 'The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture'I learn about the views of non western art. I learn about the 1900 Paris worlds fairs that ran for 8 months and was the biggest fair in the world. half of the whole fair was devoted to the French Imperialism and the other half to the nation's colonies. However, in one side it showed how there were many nationalism. the image of the colonies were not coherent or consistent. There was an image of the Dahome ambassador that show he was very culture and civilized man. However in the exhibits they show the Dahome people in a very violent way. They showcased them as being uncivilized people. They used these images as an excuse to colonized and materialized these African countries. The other countries were presented by architecture. However, the African countries were said to have no architecture and was displayed to people as art in the eyes of the french.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
One of the videos really was related to the way we created our Art Criticism project because in our project we had to showcase artworks and in the second video i talked about it describes how the french were critiquing and displaying the African art.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?
I really like the first video about the Renaissance because it was like a movie of a apprentice critiquing art. On the video the apprentice told Giorgio vasari that he did not understand how so many people liked Giotto's work. He described Giotto's art as very flat. At that moment he was being an art critique. However, Vasari quickly corrected him and told him that many important artist learned from the way Giotto painted. he later explained that it was Giotto that brought back nature and realism to the Roman art culture.
