Module 13 14 video blog

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video that I choose was Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach. This video at first seemed odd to me because it strange that someone would create a whole segment on how modern art is displayed. The video discuss a museum of modern art that was open in 2004. They said it was one of the most successful modern art museums in the world. The museum of modern art in New York city open in 1929 and is often refereed to as MOMA. In this museum was created the new form of displaying modern art. The director displayed the art in a chronological order. he also displayed the art on white walls with white lighting. guest would move in a straight path through the exhibits. he would place art related to each other or by the same artist in a room.artist in the museum would also place the residue of their art work. how their homes looked after they finish the work. Some art galleries became noisy after the noisy art work was placed. The next vodei talks about lowbrow that is an art form from the west coast of the united states. Each artist has a meaning to what is lowbrow to them. Artist Antony Aussang explains that this art is reactionary to highbrow culture. The definition of the word lowbrow is a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. At first the name lowbrow was use to describe the art work that had naked girls and cars and cartoons. however, the name stuck and that is one of the ways it originated from.  Lowbrow has evolved to having a meaning of its know and it now does not mean what it did originally; which was pornography. A lot of planes and cars had lowbrow art on them. A lot of the mechanics became part of the lowbrow culture. It was an art that people could relate to whether it was about the cars or the pin up girls. Pop culture and consumerism cultures were very influential in the development of the genre. many Artist would raw the thing that they had in their house. They would also draw what was going on in society at the time like they did with people going into the space and the moon.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
I think that only one of the videos relate to the creation of my art exhibit project. this was the first video that I talked about. The reason it relates because in the project we had to report on how the art exhibit was set up. I thought the teacher was just being stupid when she made us do this. However, After I saw the video i found out that a lot of work is put into finding out how an art work is going to be placed on an exhibit and how the audience are going to view it.
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
Both films added depth and understanding to my about my projects. however, I did not like the film about art placement in an museum because it was boring. it did not make want to watch the whole entire film. however the one about lowbrow art was very good.

Burchfield Art Center Visit

Step 1: The Exhibition
1. What is the title of the exhibit?
well i was actually excited to come to Burchfield Penny because I had not been here in a long time. This means that by now they changed the exhibits. So because of that I went thorough all of them. However, the three that excited me the most were;
"Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now," "McCallum Tarry: Intersections," and "Iron Organism."

 "McCallum Tarry: Intersections

Iron Organism

2. What is the theme of the exhibition?
The theme of Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now, is a juxtaposition between old and new arts and crafts. They were all together in a flow of objects. Some of them were furniture others were sculptures that were abstract in form.
The theme for McCallum Tarry: Intersections was mainly focused on marginalized members of our society and the issues and struggles that they have had to go through.
The theme for Iron Organism simply in honor and explanation to to Iron and its properties. This exhibit explained how important iron is as an art material.

Step 2: The Gallery
1. What type of lighting is used?

Fof the Well Crafted: Roycroft Then and Now the light was very dim but every piece since it stood on its own had a spot light. However, the spot light did not look like a regular spot light because it still gave me a very settle feeling. Like it was not on my face.
McCallum Tarry: Intersections
2. What colors are used on the walls?
For the first exhibit the color on the wall of the gallery was not noticeable. Since most of the art work was not on the wall. I did not notice the wall as much. In the second one the walls were bright and White. They had most of the art work on the wall. The last one I also did not pay attention to because there was a lot of art work in the middle of the transit space.
3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?
The materials that were use were videos mostly. There were also Stands to elevate the work. In some there were glass screen protectors to protect the sculptures.
4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?
In the first one the movement was familiar because It was like walking through a home. A very expensive looking home. It had furniture and sculptures that made look like Some one's rich home.
In the second  one the movement was like a passage or a journey because you first saw a scream with a video then you turn to your right. Then after you went right there were photograph almost like an old family album. There was also a room you could go into that showed a video a a pregnant women.
The last one was like walking in an obstacle course because there was last work on the floor and in the middle of the way. There was artwork hanging from the sealing as well.

Step 3: The Artwork
1. How are the artworks organized?

the art work in the second exhibit was organized in frames like it was photos hanging in some ones home. The other two the art work was placed in the middle as if they got there on their own.
.
2. How are the artrworks similar?
In the second exhibit the art work was very similar to each other because most of it was photographs
In the first one the art work was very similar because most of it was some type of furniture you would have in your home.
In the last one the art work was similar because it was made with the same material.

3. How are the artworks different?
In the first exhibit the art work was different from each other because each was a piece of furniture that was separated from each other.
In the third exhibit the art work was also different from each other because it had different colors and shapes. They were all different objects.

4. How are the artworks framed?
The art work in the second exhibit was framed on the wall because they were photographs.
In the other other exhibits the art work was on the middle passage. It was organized in islands.
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?
All the art work in all three exhibit had a label on the side explaining its tittle and with what they were made.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?
The art work in the second exhibit the art work was very far from each other. In the other two the art work was close by in islands.

Peacock Box, Undated

The principles and elements of art that were most clear to me in this art work was shape and form. Shape because of the very feminine looking piece on the art work and form because of the form of the whole piece and the little round pieces that stick out of it.
This art work reminds me of a peacock. It did before I read the name. It looks very animallistic but at the same time feminine. The artist was trying to capture the femininity and beauty of a peacock into an abstract sculpture.

here a see the picture of an African American girl. She is looking forward  She does not have a smile on her face but a smirk  The picture is very clear not abstract but it is a small blur line. It may not be visible in this picture because of quality but it was visible in the other pictures. It is almost like the picture is lost in it's self. The principle of art that this piece uses is shape in a way the shape of her head and her collar attracts my attention. The artist wanted the viewers to get lost into the eys and history of this little girl.

Data Visualization, 2011By. Mary newbaverPainted on Iron and BronzeCourtesy of the artist.
In this piece i see many different shape pieces. They are separated. They look like corals. That was what it reminded me off. The principle of art used here are shape and color. Shape because of all the different shaped pieces and color because all the color here complement each other in a way. They make each other stand out. The artist wanted the viewer to see how resourceful is the iron and bronze. How natural metal can look when we usually look at it in an unnatural form.

Module Eleven Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The reason why choose the first video 'The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present' was because it talked about Spanish art of the north. I wanted to learn more about Spain and its artist. I choose the second video Dance at The Maulin De la Galette because the name of the video was very inviting. When I clicked on the link the image shown in the video was the painting Dance at The Maulin The La Galette. That image invited me it attracted me.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
This video was rich in history of the art of northern Spain. The first thing I learn was that northern Spain is home to a lot of the world's most celebrated artist. This list includes but is not limited to Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudi, Miro, Dali, and Goya. In the video they talked about the Father of modern art which is considered to be Goya. In the video they explained how Goya use to paint in a very happy way when he worked for the Spanish crown. However, when he became ill he started painting in a dark way. He moved outside of Madrid and died not very long after. Before he died he painted the paintings called the Dark Paintings. His work was inspired by darkness and the belief that there is no God and no hope. Then they talked about another modern artist and architect called Antoni Gaudi. In opposition from Goya, Gaudi created his works and buildings by the strong Catholic belief in God and everything god. He created a cathedral that is being ruined by the Japanese investors that are coming change it. He also created the Private Quarter which to this day still has people living in it. The building has a very organic natural design that illustrates Gaudis abstract masterpieces inside and out. The video then talks about Pablo Picasso who was an artist that moved to Barcelona at age 14. In that city he had his first sexual experience which inspired much of his art in the future. Before he died he donated much of his art to the city in return to the experiences the city gave him. Even thought, his paintings were very rich in sexuality. They represented the Catholic belief of saints being seduced by demands. The second video talks about the secret story about two paintings both called Dance at The Moulin De La Galette. These paintings were sold in a very high prize. There is to version to the same painting one is big and the other is small. Historians do not know which of the two was completed first because both are mark with 1876. The small version of the painting has not been seen in public since a very long time because it is kept in a private gallery. The painting was painted by Pierre Auguste Renoir. The painting was inspired by a Sunday afternoon in the French countryside of Montmartre. He found Montmartre as an oasis after losing his home. The reason he liked this place d=so much was because he felt it was calm and village. Unlike, how the city of Paris was. He used the local people as models. The prostitutes of the bar became models in many of his paintings and his friends were also in the painting. The painting is very happy but it fails to illustrate the abuse and prostitution the women had to go through. The bar was use as a strategic place in the war later on.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos were related to the text because it shows a lot of what we learned in the textbook. However, in the video is where I learn the most about art. The videos take the concept we learn on the textbook and they take it one e\step further.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The first film about the art of northern Spain was very helpful in teaching me about Spains art. In this video I learned more about modern art through the detailed description of Goya’s life. And Gaudi as well. In the second video it was very interesting to see the history and secrets behind one painting The Dance at the Moulin de la Galette. This painting has a very rich history and that is why is such a celebrated piece.

Art Making Materia; Week 10, Mask

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.

I selected these inspiration pieces because they were very colorful. In my country of the Dominican Republic mask are typically very colorful. Color is the main element of art used.
2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.
All three pieces look as if they were happy or in a happy mood. They look as if they were going to a parade. The colors selected to b on the mask were very bright and attractive to the eye.

3. Upload images of your sketchs and finished piece.

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
The main element I wanted to focused on was color. I wanted my mask to have colors that helped one another look better. All in the combination from each other. I created a piece inspired by Mama Tingo black women that is a character in the carnivals of my culture. I wanted to capture her face. She is a decedent of Africa and the Indians of DR. However, she is Dominican by hearth. She is however accustom to the traditions of the Europeans. She is a combination of the three races of the Dominican Republic.

5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
I thought that creating a mask was going to be difficult. However, when I got inspired I took my roommates cereal boxes and created a mask. It was fun because I got to put a little of my culture in to it.

Video Review Module 10

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected the Buddhism video because this is a religion and culture that I've always wanted to learn about. Growing up I saw small pieces of art from Buddhism about fat monks. I choose Hinduism after the Buddhism because I wanted to really see what was the difference between the two. I had always related them to be the same thing.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the first video I must point out that it was very difficult because to me this topic is hard to understand because it was something that I had never learned about. Something that was easy to understand was that Buddhism began in India. It was very interesting to find out that it began with an extraordinary man that was the son of a king, had a beautiful wife, a son, and many servants. He later went to the real world and found out that the world was not perfect. He saw disease, the waist of old people and the death. He later found a monk who helped him find the an wear to the question; is this all there is? The, he finally sat under a three under Bodh Gaya. When he awoke he saw the world in different eyes. From that the enlighten can and Buddhism was born. In the other video the journey began in Varanasi, India. I learned that it is the oldest inhabited city in the world and it was also where Hinduism was born. It is the holiest city for Hinduism. The river Ganges in Varanasi is a symbol for life, death, and rebirth. Hinduism does not have a founder, a prophet or system. It has many gods that act in the similar way Cristian saints act. They provide a window access to God. In this case Brahma.  Al these Gods that the Hindu has provided its people the opportunity to illustrate them through their beautiful art. Unlike Christian, Hindu believes in reincarnation. Hindus can worship anywhere. Everything in Hinduism is believe to be symbolic. This Symbolism is represented by the architecture and art of the Hindu. Their Temple are very small. However they have many decorative art in detailed added to them. In Hindu they use stone and rocks to turn it into art Mother earth or Mother Ganges made herself into art in a rock. At the hearth of Hinduism, giving up earthly things is key. To die in Varanasi is the drem of all hindu because this will allaw them to break from the cylce of birth and reincarnation.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The video related to readinf in the text because it gave a picture and story about all the things we learned in the text. In the video we got to see moving film about some of the architecture and arts that we got to learn about in the book. Such as the beautiful city of Varanasi.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
the videos were really key in provided with depth and understandings about the topic at hand. this week the videos were more important than they ever were because they further explained a very difficult concept which is religion through art. Especially the art of these two cultures or religions Buddhism and Hinduism. These are two concepts that are very difficult to explain by just Reading about it on a textbook.
