1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the
selection listed above.
The reason why choose the first video 'The Mystical North: Spanish Art from
the 19th Century to the Present' was because it talked about Spanish art of the
north. I wanted to learn more about Spain and its artist. I choose the second
video Dance at The Maulin De la Galette because the name of the video was very
inviting. When I clicked on the link the image shown in the video was the
painting Dance at The Maulin The La Galette. That image invited me it attracted
me.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
This video was rich in history of the art of northern Spain. The first thing
I learn was that northern Spain is home to a lot of the world's most celebrated
artist. This list includes but is not limited to Pablo Picasso, Antoni
Gaudi, Miro, Dali, and Goya. In the video they talked about the Father of
modern art which is considered to be Goya. In the video they explained how Goya
use to paint in a very happy way when he worked for the Spanish crown. However,
when he became ill he started painting in a dark way. He moved outside of
Madrid and died not very long after. Before he died he painted the paintings
called the Dark Paintings. His work was inspired by darkness and the belief
that there is no God and no hope. Then they talked about another modern artist
and architect called Antoni Gaudi. In opposition from Goya, Gaudi created his
works and buildings by the strong Catholic belief in God and everything god. He
created a cathedral that is being ruined by the Japanese investors that are
coming change it. He also created the Private Quarter which to this day still has
people living in it. The building has a very organic natural design that illustrates
Gaudis abstract masterpieces inside and out. The video then talks about Pablo
Picasso who was an artist that moved to Barcelona at age 14. In that city he
had his first sexual experience which inspired much of his art in the future.
Before he died he donated much of his art to the city in return to the
experiences the city gave him. Even thought, his paintings were very rich in
sexuality. They represented the Catholic belief of saints being seduced by
demands. The second video talks about the secret story about two paintings
both called Dance at The Moulin De La Galette. These paintings were sold in a
very high prize. There is to version to the same painting one is big and the
other is small. Historians do not know which of the two was completed first because
both are mark with 1876. The small version of the painting has not been seen in
public since a very long time because it is kept in a private gallery. The painting
was painted by Pierre Auguste Renoir. The painting was inspired by a Sunday afternoon
in the French countryside of Montmartre. He found Montmartre as an oasis after losing
his home. The reason he liked this place d=so much was because he felt it was
calm and village. Unlike, how the city of Paris was. He used the local people
as models. The prostitutes of the bar became models in many of his paintings and
his friends were also in the painting. The painting is very happy but it fails
to illustrate the abuse and prostitution the women had to go through. The bar
was use as a strategic place in the war later on.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos were related to the text because it shows a lot of what we
learned in the textbook. However, in the video is where I learn the most about
art. The videos take the concept we learn on the textbook and they take it one
e\step further.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding
of the readings and art concepts?
The first film about the art of northern Spain was very helpful in teaching
me about Spains art. In this video I learned more about modern art through the
detailed description of Goya’s life. And Gaudi as well. In the second video it
was very interesting to see the history and secrets behind one painting The
Dance at the Moulin de la Galette. This painting has a very rich history and
that is why is such a celebrated piece.
